Although all home owners remember to secure their doors and windows of their house, sometimes people overlook another important facet of home security – mail box and garage door locks. One important way to further secure your home and belongings is to install adequate mail box and garage door unlocking and locking mechanisms.
Your mail box may not appear to be a cache of valuables, but to identity thefts it is. Information about your credit history, account numbers, insurance, and medical history may all be available for the taking if you leave your mail box unsecured. Mail boxes are considered federal property and thus vandalizing them or robbing from them is considered a federal crime – and yet it happens every day. In fact, mail box theft is one of the easiest low-tech ways for a novice criminal to acquire the necessary information for identity theft. However, purchasing a mail box lock can help protect you from would-be identity thieves.
There are locking mechanisms on the market for virtually every type of mail box. Whether you have a standalone mail box or one attached to the side of your house, you can purchase a high-security receptacle to replace your existing mail box. If you wish to keep your existing mailbox, you can purchase an insert that allows the mailman to open the flap and insert mail into a slit that only you can access. There are also locks you can affix to the exterior of your mail box if you wish to prevent others from opening the box’s flap at all. (In that case, though, you’ll obviously need to install a slit for the mailman.)
It is also important to secure your garage door. Although your garage may not necessarily hold the same personal and identity information as your mail box, it holds valuable tools and equipment. Also, your garage often offers another entrance to your home, and neglecting to secure your garage door can allow would-be criminals access to a door that is better obscured from public view.
Garage doors are most commonly secured by a slide door bolt. Slide bolts are attached to the inside of the door and thus can only be secured from the inside. T-handle locks are an exterior type of garage door lock and they require a key to operate. Both slide bolts and T-handle locks can be problematic when used with automatic garage door openers, as it easy to forget to unlock the door before using the automatic opener. Electronic garage door locks, however, avoid this problem by unlocking the lock before opening the door. Although they are the most expensive, electronic garage door locks are the most secure of the locking mechanisms discussed here.
Whenever you’re trying to improve your home security, take the time to reevaluate your mail box and garage unlocking and locking mechanisms.
